It can be either:
Minor tranquilizers: Anxiolytics (medication reduces anxiety).
Major tranquilizers: Antipsychotics (medication used to manage psychosis which affects how the brain functions).
Valium for sleep is one of the minor tranquilizers that are used for treating anxiety, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and muscle spasms or stiffness.
Valium is used to treat seizures in combination with other medicines.
It works by controlling the hyperactivity of brain function to relieve severe stress and anxiety.
Valium must be taken under a doctor’s supervision as its dose changes according to the patient’s condition, age, and response to medication and the dose must never be increased by yourself as it may cause some serious side effects and overdose effect as we will discuss later in this article.

Valium for sleep is a long-acting medication compared to other drugs with the same action; it takes from 30 to 56 hours to get out from the body.
Valium for sleep is very effective, potent, and has a fast onset of action but if it is misused it will easily lead to addiction.
Taking Valium for sleep for longer than 4-6 weeks and with a dose more than acceptable even with a doctor’s prescription will lead to addiction to the drug.
Symptoms of Valium addiction:
- Feeling the need to have more pills to reach the desired effect.
- Craving for the drug before the time for the next dose.
- Become isolated from family and friends.
- Continuation in using the drug although has caused me many problems.
- Loss of interest in any activities or work.
- Ignoring the must-do things.
Even though you must not stop the drug from your own, Valium can cause very serious withdrawal symptoms that may lead to coma and even death.
Valium should be reduced gradually under the supervision of a doctor.
“Taking up to 60 tablets per day was not enough anymore to reach euphoria they were barely enough to reach somehow normal”
Valium is more likely to be used for those who struggle with the daily stress which affects their sleeping quality, it gives them calmness and euphoria especially with high doses, and those who are most vulnerable to addiction.
“Valium was making me not caring for the world anymore even if the house got on fire, I would say so what?!”
Overdosing is highly dangerous as it may lead to:
- Bluish lips.
- Double vision.
- Difficulty breathing.
- General weakness.
- Difficulty in coordination.
“Benzodiazepines (tranquilizers like Valium and Xanax) and opioids (it is a class of drugs that include illegal heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers legally available by a prescription like oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, and many others) strengthen each other giving higher effects of both of them but they can also cause death.”
– Dr. Michael Kelley, NPR, 2014
Valium may also counteract with some food like grapefruit, consuming large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice strengthen the effects of Valium and can cause serious side effects.
Side effects:
- Severe allergic reaction.
- Hives (Urticaria).
- Difficulty breathing.
- Swelling of face, lips, tongue, and throat.
- Severe drowsiness or dizziness.
- Mood or behavior changes.
- Anxiety, depression, or worsening of both of them.
