Paracetamol and Diazepam

Two drugs are taken together and there is no problem with it?

Two drugs, one for anxiety and the other one for pain, two that are solving your most irritating drugs, and with no interactions happening.

Yes, these two drugs are Paracetamol and Diazepam.

So, what are Paracetamol and Diazepam?

Let’s go to know them together.

Paracetamol, known in the United States as acetaminophen, the most commonly known drug for pain and fever.

It is known as the safest drug to use, it is safe to be used in pregnant women, breastfeeding, and even in neonates.

Paracetamol is used in many conditions, like headache, muscle aches, arthritis (Swelled and tendered joints, distinctive by pain and stiffness of joints), backache, toothaches, colds, and fevers.

It relieves pain but doesn’t affect the inflammation and swelling of joints.

Paracetamol and Diazepam

Warnings:

The maximum dose taken from Paracetamol is 1 gram per dose and 4 grams per day.

Taking care of the dose and knowing the maximum dose is very important to avoid overdosing.

Overdose can cause serious harm, like damaging the liver.

If you drink more than 3 alcoholic drinks per day, or if you are suffering from alcoholic liver disease (liver cirrhosis), you should not use Paracetamol without a consult with your doctor.

If the doctor decided you can take Paracetamol when you are drinking more than 3 alcoholic drinks per day, the maximum dose approved is 2 grams per day.

Using over-the-counter cold, cough, allergy, and pain medications may cause overdose, as most of these drugs contain Paracetamol.

Interactions:

There are no completely contraindicated drugs to be used with Paracetamol, but there is a list of drugs that cause serious interaction, and an alternative drug should be used.

  • imatinib
  • isoniazid

  • levonorgestrel oral/ethinylestradiol/ferrous bisglycinate
  • lixisenatide
  • lomitapide
  • midazolam intranasal
  • mipomersen
  • tazemetostat
  • tetracaine
  • tinidazole
  • warfarin

These are not the only drugs interacting with Paracetamol, always consult with your doctors about the drugs you are taking before taking a new one.

Side effects:

  • Angioedema (swelling below the skin, it may be due to an allergy to a trigger or a medicine)
  • Disorientation
  • Dizziness
  • Pruritic maculopapular rash (blisters on a flat and red patch of skin)
  • Rash
  • Hyperammonemia (Excess ammonia in the blood leading to brain injury and death)
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a rare and dangerous disorder of the skin and mucous membrane)
  • Urticaria
  • Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis (a rare and serious skin condition)
  • Laryngeal edema (Complication happens as a result of intubation)
  • Agranulocytosis (very dangerous blood disorder)
  • Leukopenia (low count of white blood cells)
  • Neutropenia (lower number of neutrophils than normal, a type of white blood cells)
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Liver failure
  • Nephrotoxicity (a kidney problem)
  • Pneumonitis (inflammation of lung tissues)

What about Diazepam?

Diazepam is a benzodiazepine, used in conditions like anxiety, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, seizures, and muscle spasms.

It is also used in providing sedation before having surgery, a dental procedure, or if sedation is required in the ICU (Intensive care unit).

Diazepam works by affecting certain neurotransmitters calming the brain and nerves.

Warnings:

Opioid medications like hydrocodone, oxymorphone, morphine, codeine, and fentanyl, can cause a serious case of shallow breathing or even stop breathing if used with diazepam.

Diazepam may cause misuse, if you have a history of abuse or addiction to any kind of drugs or alcohol, you have to tell your doctor before taking it.

Diazepam may cause a serious allergic reaction, take care of any signs of hives, swelling of face, lips, and tongue, and rash.

This drug did not prove effectiveness and safety in children younger than 6 months old, so it should not I children younger than 6 months old.

Interactions:

Like Paracetamol, diazepam doesn’t have completely contraindicated with it but has drugs causing serious interactions, and an alternative drug should be used.

Another list of drugs needs close monitoring when used with diazepam, always tell your doctor about drugs you are taking before taking a new one.
