Brand name of diazepam
Brand name of diazepam
When a drug company produces a new drug, they apply to the responsible institutions for patency.
This reserves the right for this company to be the only selling company for this drug, and this patency may last for about 20 years.
The company sells the drug under a brand name given by the producing company itself.
After the patency expires, other companies have the right to produce the same drug with the same active constituent, the same quality, efficacy, and safety, but under other brand names, these drugs are known as generic drugs.
Generic drugs differ from the brand one in shape, color, and taste as the trade laws state.
These differences have resulted from inactive ingredients such as dyes, fillers, and preservatives.
The first brand name of diazepam is Valium, it was first manufactured by Hoffman La Roche in 1959, it entered the market under that name in 1963, and then became from the most selling drugs in the United States from 1968 to 1982.
Another brand name of diazepam is Diastat, manufactured by Bausch company, and got approval from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 1997.
What is the brand name of diazepam?
Valium is a drug containing diazepam as an active constituent, taken under the supervision of a doctor to treat symptoms of anxiety, muscle spasms, withdrawal symptoms of alcohol, and it is used also as a sedative before having surgery or for managing seizures.
Diazepam can also be used with other medicine, however, not all drugs can be combined, some drugs when combined may cause serious side effects.
Drug-drug interactions:
There are no drugs that are completely contraindicated with diazepam, however, there is a list of drugs that may cause serious side effects with diazepam, and they should not be used together unless the benefits outweigh the risks.

One of the most important drugs interactions that even lead the FDA to issue a black box warning, is the combination between opioids and diazepam.
The combination of them may cause severe drowsiness, slowed breathing, coma, and death.
Opioids include hydrocodone, codeine, and tramadol.
Not just drugs, there are also a group of medical health problems that prevent the use of diazepam.
Warnings for patients with certain health problems:
- Patients with kidney impairment:
Diazepam is not effectively eliminated, and more drug stays in the body for a longer time, increasing the risk of side effects
- Patients with acute narrow-angle glaucoma:
An eye problem including increased pressure in the eye preventing the use of diazepam with this condition
- Patients with a history of drug or alcohol abuse:
Diazepam may lead to dependence or addiction, that’s why it should not be used with patients with a history of it
- Patients with liver impairment:
Liver impairment may lead to prolonged effects of diazepam in the body, putting the patient at a higher risk of side effects
- Patients with mental health problems:
Make sure to tell your doctor if you have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts or acts, as diazepam worsens these conditions which may be dangerous
- Patients with myasthenia gravis:
Myasthenia gravis is a medical health problem causing extreme muscle weakness and tiredness, that’s why diazepam should not be used with patients with this medical condition
- Patients with breathing problems:
Diazepam affects the CNS (Central Nervous System) causing breathing difficulties, using it with patients with breathing problems may cause the stop of breathing
Pregnancy:
Diazepam is classified as pregnancy category D, which means that the studies showed an increased risk of adverse effects affecting the fetus such as deformities, muscle weakness, breathing and eating problems, low body temperature, and withdrawal symptoms.
So, diazepam should not be used in pregnancy if only the benefits outweigh the risks.
Breastfeeding:
Diazepam is secreted into breast milk and it may cause serious side effects to the baby.
Side effects:
Call your doctor immediately if you felt:
- Severe drowsiness or dizziness
- Mood or behavioral changes
- Depression or anxiety (new or worsened symptoms)
- Suicidal thoughts
- Confusion or hallucinations
- Sleeping problems
- Seizures (new or worsened ones)
Common side effects:

Overdose:
Taking too much diazepam may lead to serious side effects such as,
- Change of consciousness
- Confusion
- Difficulty in breathing
- Lack of coordination
- Loss of strength and energy
- Pain and weakness of muscles
- Paleness
- Bluish lips, fingernails, or skin
- Shakiness and sleepiness
- Unsteadiness
- Trembling
Taking drugs as the doctor prescribed and determined prevents undesirable side effects or dangerous ones.
Ask your doctor about the information in this article before taking diazepam.

What Is Diazepam and How Does It Work?
Diazepam as an anticonvulsant drug is used to treat episodes of increased seizures (such as cluster or breakthrough seizures). It’s used as an add-on medication in people who are already taking other drugs to control their seizures.
This medication is only recommended for the short-term treatment of seizure attacks. To understand more, It is not for continuous daily use for seizures prevention like other antiepileptics. Uncontrolled episodes of seizures can be very harmful seizures that do not stop and may contribute to death (status epilepticus).
Diazepam is contraindicated for children younger than 6 months, serious side effects may occur.
Diazepam belongs to a group of medicines (benzodiazepines) that work by enhancing calming neurotransmitters in the brain causing a sedative effect.
Diazepam is available under the following various trademark names:
Diazepam, Valium, Diastat, and Diastat AcuDial.
Diazepam strengths
Diazepam is available as:
-Oral tablets: strengths of 2 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg.
(It may be prescribed in doses ranging from 2 mg to 10 mg, 2-4 times per day).
-Rectal gel: strengths of 2.5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg. (a lower dose may be recommended).
-Injectable solution: strength of 5mg/mL (in-hospital use).
-Intramuscular device: strength of 5mg/mL (in-hospital use).
How much diazepam should I take?
Diazepam is a prescription drug. You should only take the dose prescribed to you by your doctor based on your case. Never take more than recommended by a healthcare provider, and only take this medication as directed.
How much diazepam is safe?
The approved daily dose of diazepam is 4 to 40 mg throughout the day. Overdosing on diazepam requires taking times and times of the maximum recommended dose. Little more isn’t a serious dose as people have been reported taking doses of up to 2000 mg and experiencing only insignificant toxicity. So this medication is considered safe and very difficult to overdose on.
Is diazepam addictive?
You can acquire a tolerance to diazepam medication especially If you take it for the long term. You can also develop eventual dependence or addiction. This risk is increased in people who are taking diazepam in high doses.
Overdosing
It’s possible to overdose on diazepam, especially when it is used with other drugs or alcohol. The effects of diazepam in the brain are linked to two key neurotransmitters called GABA and dopamine. While GABA is reducing brain activity and this medication enhances its effects, diazepam is so effective as an anti-anxiety drug. Dopamine is responsible for dependence and this medication boosts dopamine levels in the brain, which stimulates dependence and addiction.
Much GABA activity is the main reason for diazepam overdose symptoms. This increased effect causes the CNS to slow down to the point where respiration and heart rate are involved. When breathing becomes so slow and uneven causing oxygen depletion in the brain, respiratory depression occurs.
Respiratory depression can cause unconsciousness, coma, and death.
Combining two or more central nervous system depressants like alcohol puts you at a higher risk of an overdose. Also, opioids or other benzodiazepines can’t be taken within a few hours of diazepam.
Addiction
Benzodiazepines may be addictive. However, diazepam is addictive with longer-lasting effects than other benzodiazepines. An addiction to this medication can advance shortly if the drug is used for longer than 4-6 weeks. Using this medication in a way not authorized by a doctor also contributes to addiction.
Over time, it is harder for a diazepam dependent brain to process naturally without the medication. The dangerous issue also is some people addicted to this drug may not even know that they have a problem.
Withdrawal
Withdrawal symptoms occur when the person stops taking or lowers the dose of a tolerable drug abruptly. These are a series of physical and mental negative symptoms.
These symptoms include:
- restlessness
- agitation
- irritability
- headaches
- muscle aches
- vomiting
- sweating
- tremors
- anxiety
- insomnia
- tension
- confusion
- dysphoria
In more severe cases, diazepam withdrawal signs are underlined by:
- depersonalization
- numbness
- tingling of limbs
- hypersensitivity
- seizures
Withdrawal management
Physicians create a tapering strategy for diazepam for people who have a physical dependence on it. Another benzodiazepine is combined with diazepam and slowly the diazepam dose is lowered till discontinuation.
Other drugs may be used:
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
Melatonin
Anticonvulsant medications
Muscle relaxant baclofen
mgs diazepam
mgs diazepam
mgs diazepam:
mgs: is a common abbreviation of milligrams which is a mass unit.

They are also used in combination with some antiepileptic drugs to treat certain types of seizures. They are often used to treat sleeping problems related to anxiety.
One of the drugs belonging to the benzodiazepines family is Valium.
Valium is an FDA-approved drug to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, and insomnia. It contains the active substance diazepam.
One of the frequently asked questions is the effect of the Valium stress test.
Other members of the benzodiazepine family:
- Alprazolam (Xanax).
Uses of benzodiazepine:
The drugs of this family are prescribed for adult men and women to treat:
- Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
- Panic disorders.
- Muscle spasms.
- Insomnia (sleeplessness) related to anxiety.
- Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
- Combination therapy to treat seizures.
Benzodiazepines family can also be used for other conditions such as sedation during medical operations or surgeries and treatment of certain types of anxiety that don’t respond to antidepressants.
Mode of action of benzodiazepines:
Benzodiazepines work by increasing the effects of a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This chemical is responsible for sending messages from the brain to your body. Increasing the levels of GABA in your brain leads to less brain activity and thus causes sedation and calmness.
Valium is a habit-forming drug that can lead to addiction. That’s why Valium is prescribed for short-term treatment only. Long-term treatment with Valium will lead to tolerance. Tolerance means that the patient needs to increase the dose because the usually taken dose is no longer effective.
Before asking about the Valium stress test, you should know that Valium interacts with a wide range of medications treating several health conditions. These interactions can also increase the probability of the occurrence of hazardous side effects.
Always keep a list of all the drugs that you use whether they are prescription drugs or non-prescription drugs, or even herbal products. Share this list with your doctor or the pharmacist to help them in monitoring your case and judging any changes with the Valium stress test.
Here, a list of some and not all drugs that can interfere with Valium action:
- Antidepressants (drugs used to treat depression).
- Antipsychotics (drugs used to treat mental health conditions).
- Anticonvulsants (drugs used to treat epileptic seizures).
- Hypnotics (drugs used to treat insomnia).
- Antihistamines (drugs used to treat allergic reactions).
- Strong pain killers such as tramadol, codeine, morphine, and methadone.
- Antifungals (drugs used to treat fungal infections such as fluconazole and itraconazole).
- Proton-pump inhibitors (drugs used to reduce stomach acids such as omeprazole and esomeprazole).
- Muscle relaxants (drugs used to treat muscle spasms such as baclofen).
- Medicines to treat alcohol addiction (disulfiram).
- Isoniazid (a medicine used to treat tuberculosis).
- Rifampicin (a medicine used to treat bacterial infections).
- Medicines to treat asthma (theophylline).
What is meant by the side effects of a drug?
They are a group of undesired and often unexpected results of a drug that is produced with the desired and intended effect of a drug. These side effects may be minor and with no serious effect on the patient’s health and usually, disappear within a few days of drug administration or they can be serious and life-threatening effects. According to the benefits expected from the drug compared with the harms of its side effects, the doctor will determine if the drug is suitable for your condition or not.
Common side effects of Valium:
- Loss of memory.
- Increased or decreased appetite.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Dry mouth.
- Decreased libido.
- Weight gain.
- Body imbalance.
More serious side effects:
- Respiratory depression.
- Abuse and dependence.
- Withdrawal symptoms.
- Increased or decreased heart rate.
- Severe decrease in blood pressure.
Stress test:
A type of electrocardiographic examination that is used to test how the heart functions before, during, and after a certain period of increasing controlled exercise.
The exercise is done on a treadmill, and the result of the test gives an idea of the condition of the heart and how it works during physical activity.
The stress test is done while monitoring some functions such as breathing, heart rhythm, heart rate, and blood pressure using a medical device.
A doctor recommends the stress test for patients having some symptoms that indicate a heart condition such as:
- Chest pain.
- Irregular heartbeat.
- Difficulty breathing.
When having a Valium stress test, studies have shown that Valium can cause a reduction in blood pressure and increased heart rate at rest and also during exercising.
In general, the results of the Valium stress test are not accurate yet and are difficult to compare. This is due to the large variety of factors affecting the test such as drug dosage, type of administration, and duration of treatment.

But is Valium a pain pill?
To answer this question you have to know first what is Valium and what are Valium uses.
Valium is the brand name for an active substance called diazepam. Diazepam is one of the medicines that belong to a family of drugs known as benzodiazepines. This is the same family of alprazolam and clonazepam.
All benzodiazepine members work in the same way, they produce calming and sedation effects by reducing the action of certain chemicals in the brain that can increase anxiety in high amounts. These chemicals are called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), leading to the treatment of some conditions such as anxiety, seizures, and insomnia.
Valium has the privilege over other drugs in being also an anticonvulsant drug. That’s why it is widely used for the treatment of epilepsy, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and ICU agitation.

Diazepam nursing considerations
Diazepam nursing considerations
Anxiolytic–hypnotic medications like diazepam are used to soothe an individual with over-responses to environmental stress. These agents are called anxiolytics as they prevent fear. Also, they are referred to as sedatives (help feeling quiet and hypnotics (treat insomnia). These categories are very critical to administer and diazepam nursing considerations should be contemplated.

What’s diazepam?
Diazepam is an anxiolytic-hypnotic drug belonging to a group of chemically related drugs called benzodiazepines. This group of medicine works by enhancing some neurotransmitters in the brain which are responsible for the calming effects.
Indications
Diazepam is used in several cases:
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Preoperative sedation
- Conscious sedation
- Management of seizures
- Treatment of alcohol withdrawal symptoms
Method of administration
– By mouth: tablets, capsules or oral solutions.
– Slow IV injection.
– IV infusion.
– Intramuscular injection: only given if both oral and IV routes are unavailable.
– Rectal (tubes and suppositories) if the patient shouldn’t take it orally.
Diazepam nursing considerations
Here are critical nursing considerations when administering this drug:
Nursing Assessment
The nurse should consider some issues while in conducting assessing the patient, taking history, etc:
Assess for the basic cautions and contraindications for this medication including drug allergies, psychosis, glaucoma, and other contraindications to prevent any unwanted complications.
Perform a detailed physical examination to create baseline data before the treatment journey begins. This assessment is critical for the evaluation of the therapy effectiveness, and to determine the occurrence of any adverse effects during valium drug therapy.
Scan results of laboratory tests (e.g. renal and liver functions tests, complete blood count (CBC), etc.) to evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy and determine adverse effects occurrence. Also, monitoring lab results allow immediate treatment for any developing complications.
Administration precautions
These are important nursing interferences to be considered in the case of diazepam administration:
- Administer slowly diuretics intravenously to prevent severe changes in the body fluid and electrolytes.
- Do not mix the drug in solution with any other drugs to avoid possible dangerous drug-drug interactions.
- Keep patients who receive diazepam intravenously in bed for at least 3 hours to ensure patient safety.
- Monitor the patient’s vital signs carefully, hydration, electrolytes and weight to assess the drug therapy effectiveness.
- Monitor kidney and liver function for long-term use to detect dysfunction and to lower or discontinue diazepam if the kidney or liver has been injured.
- Provide safety measures like adequate lighting, protected beds, etc to prevent injuries.
- monitor the blood pressure, pulse and respiration in case of IV administration.
- Provide frequent sips of water for dry mouth.
- advise with enough fluids and food rich with fibre for constipation.
- Evaluate patient response and mental state.
Evaluation
One of the important diazepam nursing considerations is determining the effectiveness of the regimen. The factors that should be examined regularly are:
Observe patient response to the regimen based on the pointed indication like proper sleeping, controlled anxiety, etc.
Track any adverse effects such as hypotension, hepatic or renal dysfunction, etc.
Evaluate patient adherence to the drug regimen, ask him to name the drug, why it’s used, and possible important adverse effects.
Adverse effects
Like any other drug, valium could cause mild to serious side effects, these include:
Gastrointestinal:
Nausea
Abdominal pain
Bloody vomit
Black stools
Central nervous system:
Confusion
Agitation
Depression
Hyperexcitability
Irritability or bad mood
False thoughts and beliefs
Suicidal thoughts or acts
Urinary tract:
Difficult urination
Frequent urination
Decreased amount of urine
Dark urine
Loss of bladder control
Other effects:
Pale skin
Yellow eyes
Headache
Decreased appetite
Fast heartbeat
Fast or irregular breathing
Patient education
If you are using diazepam:
– Tell your doctor about non-prescribed medications you intend to use and don’t start taking them before your doctor approves them.
– Don’t use any other psychoactive drugs unless prescribed.
– Avoid drinking alcohol.
– Do not use this medication for the stress of everyday life.
– Do not use it for more than four months as it may cause dependence unless directed by your doctor.
– Avoid taking bigger doses or more frequent doses than prescribed.
– May cause sleepiness, avoid driving, operating dangerous machinery or any other activities requiring attention.
– Do not stop taking it suddenly without consulting your doctor to avoid harmful withdrawal symptoms.
– Stand up slowly and carefully as fainting may occur.
– Seek psychiatric help if you think you have suicidal thoughts or depression symptoms.
– Store securely, far from children.
Diazepam is a vital and critical drug and should be used with caution. Diazepam nursing considerations and inherent caring for the patient is a must.
