What is Zopiclone and what it is used for?
Zopiclone belongs to a group of medicines called hypnotics (sleeping pills).
They are used for short term treatment of insomnia (sleep problems) for patients above 18 years old suffering from:

- Sleep problems that caused by mood or mental health problems.

Don’t take Zopiclone if you:
- Have myasthenia gravis (a problem that causes severe muscle weakness).
- Have Respiratory problems (lungs don’t work properly).
- Have sleep apnea (stop breathing at night).
- Have hepatic problems.

What is Diazepam and what it is used for?
Diazepam belongs to a group of medicines called benzodiazepines which are used mainly in the treatment of anxiety, muscle spasm, and convulsions.
- In adults, Diazepam is used as a short-term treatment of anxiety, muscle spasm, alcohol withdrawal, and epilepsy (together with other drugs).
- In children, Diazepam is used to treat tension caused by cerebral spasticity (disease or trauma affecting the brain causing un-coordinated movement and stiffness).
Common side effects of Diazepam:
- Respiratory depression or arrest.
- Ataxia (movement disorders).
- Swelling and skin rash.
What are drug interactions?
Taking more than one medication, or mixing it with certain foods, or over-the-counter medicines makes you subjected to the risk of a drug interaction. Although most of these interactions are not serious, it is important to know the possible outcome of these interactions.
The most famous drug interaction is the drug-drug interaction, where one drug may increase or decrease the work of the other one leading to toxicity or decreasing the medication effect.
Zopiclone (non-benzodiazepine hypnotic) and Diazepam (benzodiazepine) are both prescribed for the treatment of insomnia (sleeping disturbance), however, Zopiclone is much effective as a hypnotic than Diazepam, as Diazepam is mainly prescribed as an anti-anxiety drug.
One of the most famous drug-drug interactions is the use of Zopiclone and Diazepam together.
Zopiclone and Diazepam are contraindicated drugs both have CNS depressant effects, Zopiclone exerts its action by binding on the benzodiazepine receptor.
Taking Zopiclone and Diazepam together leads to an increase in the risk of severity of the side effects of both of them.
Both Zopiclone and Diazepam have common side effects as:
- Respiratory depression.
- Muscle weakness.
- Allergic reactions (swelling of lips, tongue, and throat, skin rash, and difficulty in breathing).
- Ataxia (loss of coordination of muscle movement).
- Difficulty in breathing.
- Delusions and hallucinations.
Zopiclone and Diazepam are not to be used in the following cases:
- Alcoholism or drug abuse.
- Kidney, liver, or heart failure.
- Epilepsy or history of seizures.

Drugs should not be used with both Zopiclone and Diazepam:
- Medicines for depression (anti-depressants).
- Anesthetics (medicines used in surgery).
- Hypnotics (medicines to relieve anxiety or for sleeping problems).
- Sedative antihistamines (medicines for hay fever and rashes).
- Some antibiotics (as erythromycin).
- Medicines for epilepsy (anticonvulsants as phenobarbital).
- Strong pain killers (as morphine and codeine).
The effect of using Zopiclone and Diazepam during pregnancy:
The use of Zopiclone and Diazepam is not recommended during pregnancy:
- Using during the second or third trimester of pregnancy causes a decrease in fetal movement and fetal heart rate.
- Using at end of pregnancy or during labor, the baby may suffer from breathing problems, muscle weakness, and difficulty in feeding.
- Using regularly at the end of pregnancy, the baby may develop physical dependence and may be at risk of withdrawal symptoms.
The use of Zopiclone and Diazepam is not recommended during lactation:
Both drugs may pass in the mother’s milk and the drug may accumulate in breastfeeding infants, especially with repeated doses.
Consult your doctor to decide to discontinue breastfeeding or discontinuing the drug.
The effects of Zopiclone and Diazepam on the ability to drive and use machines:
Both drugs act by an effect on your central nervous system (slowing the normal brain function), so they may affect the ability to drive or use machines if:
- Taken within 12 hours of performing mental activities that require alertness.
- Taken in a dose higher than the recommended dose.
- Taken with alcohol or with other central nervous system depressants.
For your safety, don’t engage in hazardous activities that require complete mental alertness, taking into consideration commitment to the dose prescribed by your doctor.
